Self Assessment tax returns in East Kilbride

We complete and file your Self Assessment tax return, work out what you owe and tell you exactly when to pay it, taking the headache out of the form filling.

We have the expertise and software to take the headache out of the form filling and compliance aspect of Self Assessment. We can provide you with practical advice on personal tax positions and the planning opportunities available to you. We can complete tax returns, calculate any tax liability and advise you on exactly when to make payments and how much to pay.

Who needs to complete a tax return?

You'll usually need to file a Self Assessment tax return if, for example, you:

  • are self-employed as a sole trader and earned more than £1,000 before expenses
  • are a partner in a business partnership
  • have income from letting property
  • have other income that isn't taxed at source, such as some dividends or foreign income

If you're not sure, ask us. It's better to check than to face a penalty.

Key Self Assessment dates

  • 5 October: register for Self Assessment if you need to file for the first time, for the tax year that ended on 5 April
  • 31 October: deadline for paper tax returns
  • 31 January: deadline for online tax returns, and for paying the tax you owe plus your first payment on account
  • 31 July: second payment on account due

A late online return gets an automatic £100 penalty, even if you have no tax to pay, and further penalties follow the longer it's late. Our Self Assessment deadlines guide explains the dates for the 2025/26 return in full.

Scottish taxpayers

If you live in Scotland, your earnings, pension and rental profits are taxed at Scottish rates, which have six bands rather than three. We make sure your return is calculated on the right basis. See the Scottish income tax rates and bands.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income from self-employment and property of over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. We can set you up with the right software and handle the submissions for you.

  • Faye was recommended to me at the side of a swimming pool in Tenerife a few years ago and it was a great piece of advice. Faye and the team are always pleasant, patient and a pleasure to deal with. I now pass on the good advice I received and recommend Oak Accountancy Solutions to anyone looking for a trustworthy, reliable and friendly accountant.

FAQs

Questions and answers

What do I need to give you for my tax return?

Usually your income and expense records for the tax year, details of any other income such as employment, pensions, rental income, savings and dividends, and your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). We'll tell you exactly what we need for your circumstances.

What happens if I miss the 31 January deadline?

HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty for a late return, even if you owe no tax. If it's three months late, daily penalties of £10 a day can be added for up to 90 days, with further penalties at six and twelve months. Interest is also charged on tax paid late.

What are payments on account?

If your last Self Assessment bill was £1,000 or more, HMRC usually asks you to pay towards next year's bill in advance, in two instalments due on 31 January and 31 July. Each is normally half of the previous year's bill. You don't have to make them if more than 80% of your tax was collected at source, for example through PAYE.
