VAT returns and VAT advice in Lanarkshire

VAT registration, returns and practical advice for businesses across Lanarkshire, with returns filed through Making Tax Digital software.

Ever changing regulations and the growing demands of HM Revenue & Customs mean VAT compliance can be a difficult administrative process. To help you manage this complex area, we provide an efficient, cost-effective VAT service, which includes:

  • assistance with VAT registration
  • advice on VAT planning and administration
  • use of the most appropriate scheme
  • VAT control and reconciliation
  • help with completing VAT returns
  • planning to minimise future problems with HM Revenue & Customs
  • negotiating with HM Revenue & Customs in disputes and representing you at VAT tribunals if necessary

Do you need to register for VAT?

You must register for VAT if your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You can also register voluntarily below the threshold, which can make sense if most of your customers are VAT-registered businesses. We'll help you weigh it up.

Making Tax Digital for VAT

All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns using software that works with Making Tax Digital. We can file your returns for you, or set you up with Xero, FreeAgent or Sage so you can keep on top of your records yourself.

Choosing the right VAT scheme

Depending on your business, the Flat Rate Scheme, Cash Accounting Scheme or Annual Accounting Scheme may save you time or money. We'll look at how you trade and recommend the one that suits you.

Construction and hospitality

Some sectors have their own VAT rules. Builders and trades may need to apply the domestic reverse charge (see construction businesses), and restaurants and cafés need to get eat-in and takeaway sales right (see hospitality businesses).
